While foraging, chickens will pick up anything that is grit-sized, so be sure there is nothing dangerous lying around that could damage them. Insoluble grit, which is flint or granite, is used in the gizzard to mechanically grind down food, and soluble grit, a calcium supplement that helps laying hens create robust eggshells, are the two varieties of chicken grit. Limestone or broken oyster or cockle shells are the most common sources of soluble grit.
